We spoke with Debra Barnes-Tábora, Curation and Collection Manager at the Cayman Islands National Museum. Debra will be presenting all about audiences at the 27th Annual Conference of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC). Caymanian basketry expert and museum lifer – here’s what Debra has to say…

  1. What do you consider to be the biggest opportunity for museums in the Caribbean?
Caribbean museums have a fantastic opportunity to have a direct impact on their societies by sheer numbers and geography. The potential for this impact is particularly true in the area of our intangible heritage. With digital equipment (smart phones) being so accessible today, most everyone can document language, song, music, dance and other vocal narratives to build an incredible data-bank for the sharing of knowledge. Through messaging, tools, collaborative and contributory approaches, our museums can increase partnerships and participation with our communities to ensure the preservation of these unique skills. Unlike here in Cayman where development has occurred so quickly, and a fair percentage of our heritage skills have become dormant, or have indeed passed away.

    2. If you could describe your organisation in one word what would it be?
    Quaint

    3. What makes your Museum or institution essential to your community?
The museum holds essential tangible links to our past – nature, heritage, culture, and people – and therefore to our future.

    4. Can you share one of your favourite moments of working in the cultural and heritage sector?
I am humbled any moment I spend with a senior citizen from whom I can sense strength, character and the benevolence of our people. Or, to experience the exuberance of a young child as they view something that is odd or unfamiliar through the power of a museum exhibition. It is also the sense of pride I get when holding or working with a century-old object.

    5. What was the last picture you took with your phone?
A photo of my mixed breed four-legged son.
