Jan Barwick

Born in New Zealand, Barwick spent her childhood in the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Malawi before moving to the Cayman Islands. She was highly prolific through the late 1980s and early 1990s before relocating to France. Travel, a keen interest in ecology and wildlife, and an exceptional colour sense combine to make her a painter of unique vision. Barwick’s keen interest in ecology and wildlife and her remarkable sense of colour create a unique vision of the Cayman Islands’ underwater environment. In a period dominated by Realist painters, her highly decorative style became iconic when it was reproduced in poster format and in merchandising across the islands. The series included several variations, depicting the reef in both sunlight and moonlight, but Coral Reef by Night is perhaps the most recognisable.

All my life, my whole family are artistic, it’s in my blood! Until about four years ago I worked in most mediums, most usually in acrylic gouache, then I discovered the iPad and the wonderful app Procreate, which I’ve been using exclusively ever since.

What inspires you to create your pieces?

Quite simply, nature.

What do you think are the most important and unique characteristics of the pieces/products you create?

Perhaps colour and line, vibrancy, playfulness? I think I have a style that people recognise as being mine.

What do you expect for your creative future?

My sister and partner Miranda and I aim to continue developing Bairiki by Jan Barwick to ensure that our all products are as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible.
