Randy Chollette

George Town-born Randy Chollette is an intuitive, self-taught artist who earned recognition early in his career by winning ‘Best in Show’ at Blue, an exhibition at Kensington-Lott Fine Art Gallery in 2002, and The McCoy Prize People’s Choice Award in 2003. His work is often distinguishable by its signature black outlined mosaic configuration. A member of the Native Sons collective, he moves confidently between Realism and abstraction, and his Rastafarian beliefs are woven into the style and subject of his paintings. His work forms part of many private collections and the public collections of NGCI, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation and the Cayman Islands National Museum.

Q & A

Where are you from?

Cayman

When did you started creating your art and what are your preferred materials?

I started as a child basically using found objects like leftover house paint, rocks and blocks to make art. It was my way of living beyond my then circumstances. I now mostly do oil on canvas, but I am beginning a new journey once again art installations.

What inspires you to create your pieces?

So many different things inspire me but if I had to choose one, I’d say I am mostly inspired by the creative process and the possibilities for interpretation within me.

What do you think are the most important and unique characteristics of the pieces/products you create?

What is unique about my work Is the way in which the work touches/affects the viewer. They bring their own experiences to this new experience and it creates someone new.

What do you expect for your creative future?

I want to continue to grow, to stretch myself more; learning is never done.
