Grimes is noted for her depictions of the Caymanian landscape and local flora, and this particular work captures the verdant foliage of a stand of Banana trees. Foregrounding the plant against a small patch of blue sky, Grimes’ emphasis is on naturalistic detail — a feature she would subsequently move away from in her more abstract oil paintings of later years.

Teresa Grimes

b. 1952

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Teresa Grimes received a BA in classical archaeology and classical art from the University of Maryland. She later studied art restoration and life drawing in Ravenna, Italy, before beginning to paint in earnest. She moved to the Cayman Islands in 1986 and quickly became an active member of the burgeoning art scene. Her work was selected to represent the Cayman Islands in the acclaimed international travelling exhibition Carib Art (1993–1995), at the Bienal del Caribe, Dominican Republic (1994), and in Carifesta X in Guyana (2008). She was awarded First Prize at the 2010 Ogier Art Award, and her work is included in the permanent collections of the Governor’s Residence, NGCI, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, and the Cayman Islands National Museum. Her work was included in the NGCI exhibitions All Access (2015) and Tropical Visions (2019).
