Mooring in the Sound
In this scene, Sibley utilises the delicate medium of pastel to capture the vibrant colours of the shallow lagoon and the pattern of sunlight reflecting off the surface of the water. The small boat at the bottom left provides a compositional focal point for the viewer, while also alluding to Cayman’s long-established maritime culture.
About the Artist
Gail Sibley
b. 1960
Gail Sibley was born to artistic parents, Jeremy and Joanne Sibley, and brought up in Kingston, Jamaica. Sibley completed a BFA (Honours) at the University of Manitoba, Canada, then went on to Graduate Studies in Art History at Queen’s University, Canada, receiving her MA in 1989. She settled in British Columbia on the west coast of Canada in 1994, where she currently lives and works. In 2002, she was awarded Signature Membership in the Pastel Society of America (PSA). Sibley has participated in national and international shows and her work is in private and corporate collections in several countries, while also teaching workshops to students in drawing and pastels. Her work can be seen at Gallery 8 (Salt Spring Island, British Columbia), Peninsula Gallery (Sidney, British Columbia), Galleria La Manzanilla, Mexico, and Kennedy Gallery, Grand Cayman. Sibley was featured in the NGCI exhibition All Access (2015).
