The Forgotten House
Widely known in Cayman as an accomplished mural painter, Garcia employs a street art-inspired aesthetic to depict Caymanian scenes, both real and imagined. Borrowing widely from historical photographs, Garcia’s work achieves a kind of hyperrealism, fusing the historical and the contemporary in unexpected ways. The jarring clash of past and future — symbolically embodied in the artist’s juxtaposition of a dilapidated wooden cottage and the hazy outline of gleaming towers yet to be built — projects a fictional vision of Cayman as a concrete jungle: one in which rampant development will surely spell the end for historical houses such as this.
