The National Gallery is participating in International Museums Day (IMD) on 18 May to celebrate the theme ‘Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion’. Established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, each year IMD helps to increase public awareness about the role of museums in society and highlights museum work around the globe. The potential of museums to create meaningful experiences for people of all origins and backgrounds is central to their social value and through this year’s theme, of Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion, International Museum Day 2020 aims at becoming a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.

This year IMD will be a digital event due to lockdown restrictions around the globe and the National Gallery of the Cayman (“NGCI”) Islands will be participating by sharing education resources and art activities that support equality, diversity and inclusion via their website and social media sites.

The public is also encouraged to explore local developments in gender equality through the Island of Women exhibition, which now available as a 360-degree virtual tour on NGCI’s website. The exhibition recognises and celebrates the vital contributions women from a variety backgrounds have made to the development of Caymanian society. Children can engage with the exhibition through age-leveled exhibition worksheets, available on the website’s Exhibition Resources page.
