Silver Thatch Basketry & Contemporary Fashion Design
The Silver Thatch Palm (Coccothrinax proctorii) is an iconic symbol of the Cayman Islands. As the National Tree, this endemic plant has been used for centuries to craft utilitarian objects such as ground baskets, hats, roofing, and rope. The production of silver thatch products was a primary economic industry until the late 20th century and a pervasive part of Caymanians’ lifestyle. Today, contemporary fashion designers are taking inspiration from traditional thatch craft by incorporating both the material and motifs of the thatch industry into modern garments. In this video, fashion designers Isy B and Angelica Dodds share how the textures, colours and shapes of Cayman’s thatching heritage have influenced their work. You’ll also hear from Cayman Brac thatch artisan and National Collection artist Annalee Ebanks on her longtime relationship to this iconic tree.
