Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has recognised International Museum Day (IMD), highlighting the role of museums in cultural exchange, enrichment, and dialogue. Celebrated on 18th May, the annual observance features events, exhibitions and educational programmes that spotlight the rich repository of resources and active engagement opportunities that museums offer.

The IMD theme for 2024 is “Museums for Education and Research”, exploring the role these institutions play in broadening educational experiences and widening public learning access for a more inclusive world.

At the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, part of our vision is to provide an enriching, inclusive environment through innovative and creative educational programmes that place Caymanian culture at the forefront while embracing the diverse traditions and cultures of our global community. These programmes are designed to reach our diverse public on all three islands from early childhood to senior years, of all abilities and social experiences, including cros s-curricular guided school tours, classroom visits and presentations, therapeutic art for rehabilitating individuals, family fun days, adult lectures and workshops, in-gallery QR code audio labels, professional development training, afterschool art clubs, wellness sessions, publications on Caymanian visual arts, and of course, exhibitions informed by research.

As we recognise IMD 2024, let’s take a photographic look back at some of the exciting programmes we’ve had the pleasure to offer thus far.
