The National Gallery (NGCI), the host of Tilting Axis 3 in 2017, is proud to support the fifth iteration of the gathering, which was recently held at Memorial ACTe in Guadeloupe. Tilting Axis (“TA”) is a roving meeting, pivoting on a Caribbean axis, that brings together artist-led initiatives, private and state sector arts institutions and artists, writers, researchers and curators, with the aim of providing opportunities for creative collaboration and to strengthen infrastructure, production and markets for the Caribbean’s visual arts sector.
NGCI’s Director, Natalie Urquhart, is privileged to be part of the TA core team and to work alongside Holly Bynoe (ARC Magazine/National Art Gallery of the Bahamas), Annalee Davis (Fresh Milk), Mario Caro (ResArtis), Tobias Ostrander (Perez Art Museum Miami) and Lise Ragbir (The Art Galleries at Black Studies at the University of Texas) to collectively shape this annual forum.
This year’s theme was “Beyond Trends: Decolonisation and Art Criticism” and featured Manthia Diawara as the keynote speaker. Other speakers included: Edouard Duval-Carrié, Florence Alexis, Ian Bethell Bennett, Dominique Brebion, Jocelyn Valton, Hrag Vartanian, Mireille Badamie, Charles Campbell, Laurella Rinçon, Johanna Auguiac-Célénice, Erin Christovale, Carlos Motta, Jerry Philogene, Tobias Ostrander, Berette Macaulay, Matilde dos Santos, Paulo Miyada, Christelle Lozère, Natalie Willis, Tiffany Boyle, Jordan Harrison and Khristina Godfrey.
Our sincere thanks to the team at Memorial ACTe, led by Director Jacques Martial, for all the work they have undertaken in preparation for hosting the 80+ delegates at their facility this year.
