A Summer of Art: Story of My Summer – Creative Carpets
06:00 pm-08:00 pmDescription
A Summer of Art • Story of My Summer – Creative Carpets
25 July 2017, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
In this activity students will be making drawings on paper that explore the style and colors of Persian silk carpets from the 16th century. Students will learn how these rugs were once used to tell stories and pass on information. Students will be shown examples of decorative carpets and then be given an array of materials and colored media to make their own images on paper. The students will then be invited to create their own decorative carpet that tells the story of their summer. At the end of the activity students will combine their drawings together to make one large carpet installation that will be displayed on the floor for their family and friends to see. This activity was inspired by Persian, decorative carpets that were made in the 16th century as an alternative method for reproducing fables and historical manuscripts. The goal of this activity is to show students how illustrations can exist in other forms outside of book and magazines. We also want students to see how textiles and other crafts can be considered artworks and learn how to work together to make large installations.
