21st Century Cayman at the National Gallery

21st Century Cayman is the name of a new exhibition at the National Gallery and explores many different contemporary interpretations of traditional Caymanian crafts.
While recognizing that many local traditions, expressing themselves through crafts such as silver thatch weaving and catboat building, have been under threat, the exhibition seeks to redress this imbalance by approaching artists and craftspeople, asking them to interpret traditional crafts in a new way.
“Working in pairs, they’ve exchanged ideas, shared time-honoured skills and explored new materials to create a fresh new vision that is both past and present Cayman. Ultimately·, we hope it will inspire the continuation of our traditional heritage in a way that is accessible and relevant to our younger generation, and encourage debate about who we want to be as 21st Century Caymanians,” said Natalie Urquhart, Curator, in her Curator’s statement.
