A multi-media interpretation in the wake of Ivan.
The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands runs numerous programmes, slide and lecture presentations, and exhibits throughout each year that bring art to the community. From December 10th 2004 to February 11th 2005 they will host Emergence, an exhibition that uses the therapeutic and transformative qualities of art, reflecting our art community’s response to the darkest hours in our recent history and the courage it has required to prevail beyond it.
In the wake of disasters and social upheavals art is often used as a way of attempting to understand what has taken place and to further the process of recovery. In response to the recent catastrophe 40 local artists from several major disciplines as well as public relations, entertainment and marketing have mobilized to create ‘Emergence’. Featuring photography, video and assemblage art that has created from recycled materials and found objects that may have lost their everyday use as a result of Ivan’s wrath, this multimedia exhibition literally presents art out of rubble.
The Gallery is proud to be partnering with members of the cultural and business community to bring this event to the public. Members of the National Orchestra will open the event; Appleby Spurling Hunter and Paget- Brown and Company Ltd. have provided funding for the exhibition; Jacques Scott and Mise En Place have provided refreshments for the opening evening and Monster Media, a new multimedia company headed up by Kenny Rankin of Vibe FM, and in association with Cayman One have produced a commemorative, behind the scenes DVD to accompany the exhibition.
Monster Media, has worked extensively with the National Gallery to take the first exhibition since Hurricane Ivan to a multi-media level. As part of their sponsorship, they have integrated their marketing and promotions work with elements like video and music entertainment to create what promises to be a stimulating experience. Following the exhibition they will also host ‘Aftermath’, in association with Breezes By the Bay restaurant. As of December 3, log onto to their new website and then click into Monster Art for behind the scenes photos of the making of the exhibition, artist information and interviews.
It is our hope that this exhibition will be a source of inspiration both for the exhibiting artists and for the larger community.
