Portrait of an Artist Opens
Press Release
Self-portraiture has always been an intriguing vehicle for analysis and self-expression, a medium through which to explore themes of identity, social status, individuality and mortality. Inhabiting the dual roles of subject and creator the artist offers his public the unique opportunity to see himself represented on his own terms.
The National Gallery’s new exhibition ‘Portrait of an Artist’ uses this well-established genre to introduce the public to a diverse range of local artists and photographers. Through their own self-portraits in painting, sculpture, drawing and photography, they have reflected the diverse social make-up of the Islands’ and given the viewer an intimate insight into the life of its contemporary artists.
