Watercolour Exhibition Spans Decades of Work

Press Release

The National Gallery, and sponsors Caledonian, are privileged to be hosting a new exhibition entitled Janet Walker – A Retrospective, featuring 35 of the artist’s well-loved watercolours.

A longstanding member of the Cayman Islands arts community, the Canadian born artist trained at the Ontario College of Art, before moving to Cayman in 1963 with her husband the late William Walker. A world away from her Canadian heritage, the unique colour and landscape inspired a whole new approach to her work. She soon traded oil paint for watercolours and began painting outdoors in order to authentically capture Cayman’s rapidly changing light.

In the years since Mrs. Walker has travelled frequently around all three islands painting some of Cayman’s most beloved views. Her subjects include the spectacular and ever-changing seascapes and landscapes, and the iconic Caymanian architecture in each district.

NGCI Director, Natalie Urquhart says of her work, “Janet Walker has a truly gifted ability to capture our ever-shifting light and its effects on our environment. She began painting at a time when the visual arts community was in its infancy and has risen to become one of the most recognisable artists in Cayman. Seen together for the first time, this beautiful collection of work pays homage to both our cultural heritage and our natural environment. It is a record of much that has been lost.”

“Caledonian is especially proud to partner with the National Gallery for this exhibit, as Janet Walker is a member of our corporate family,” said Nicole Gordon, Caledonian’s Marketing and Business Development Manager. “We are thrilled that her vibrant and innovative creations will be on display. The exhibit will offer local art patrons and visitors from around the world, the opportunity to experience a truly cultural marvel.

Featuring 35 of the artist’s works Janet Walker – A Retrospective is the most comprehensive display of her work to date.

Guests of Caledonian and members of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands will have the opportunity to preview the exhibition at 6pm on the 2nd September at the official opening event hosted by Caledonian. The show opens to the public on Friday 3rd and will run until the 10th November 2010.
