Workshop with Al Ebanks

Press Release

Al Ebanks, a self-employed Caymanian Artist whose solo exhibition Dancing to Art: The Work of Al Ebanks Interpreted by Dance is currently on at the National Gallery, will be offering a free workshop: Introduction to Sculpture, sponsored by Rawlinson Hunter. Al studied art at the Cayman Islands High School and over the years has developed a unique style that is a fresh twist of abstraction and expressionism. Al is a ‘Radley Gourzong Award’ recipient, which is presented to a person who has made extraordinary contributions to the arts and Caymanian Culture. In 2001 he won an Artistic Achievement award from CNCF, and in 2002 a commendation from the McCoy Prize judging panel. Al is also proud to be one of the founding members of Native Sons, a group of artists established in 1996 to develop and promote Caymanian artists, and has exhibited widely in Cayman, and several times overseas.

With the upcoming workshop, Al wants to encourage more people to start stone carving using alabaster and soapstone. The workshop will focus on getting the participant to really look at the stone and notice the lines and forms, it is not so much about detail. The stone used is relatively soft so it lends itself to fast results and motivates first-timers to continue with the art.

Participants will learn about the importance of three-dimensional feel and the sense of touch as is heightened. Tools will be provided on loan with a CI$25.00 per participant fee to offset cost. To register and for directions to Al’s George Town studio where the workshop will take place, please call 916-0063.
