Bendel Hydes

National Collection Acquisitions

17 Feb – 1 Oct 2020

Exhibition

Widely regarded as the founding father of contemporary art in the Cayman Islands, Bendel Hydes’ work represents the pinnacle of Caymanian artistic expression over the past half a century. Following his career-defining retrospective at the National Gallery in 2019, the works in this exhibition represented some of the highlights from the artist’s own personal collection. Each of the 12 paintings were featured in that landmark exhibition and collectively they represented the evolution of his studio practice from the early 1980s to the mid–2000s.

As the first Caymanian artist to receive international acclaim, Hydes is critical to the wider understanding of Caymanian art and culture. To date, Hydes is underrepresented in the National Collection and the aim of this exhibition is to raise the necessary funds through public and private donations to secure each of the works in perpetuity.

With this exhibition, NGCI aimed to raise funds to acquire these priceless artefacts of cultural heritage for its National Collection, and henceforth safeguard them for future generations.
