Circumnavigating the Globe

Works by Bendel Hydes

1 Feb – 31 May 2012

Exhibition

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) opened its new venue with a fitting exhibition of The Alan & Karen Collection of works by Bendel Hydes, one of NGCI’s founding members. Hydes was also a founding member of the Cayman Islands National Museum and the Cayman National Cultural Foundation. He has been a central influence in the development of art in Cayman since he began painting in the 1970s. His work represents the pinnacle of Caymanian art to date.

This series, previously unseen in Cayman, forms an imaginary journey around the globe. Each of the twelve paintings represents 30 degrees of longitude beginning at 90-60 degrees West — the meridians that locate both the Cayman Islands and the artist’s adopted city New York. The journey continues eastward in the direction of the earth’s rotation with each work centring on an individual area of interest, meandering north or south, as it crosses each meridian.
