Exhibition
Created with the intent to “celebrate nature and her power to make, and to shake, our individual and collective universe”, Forces of Nature was a group exhibition that presented the work of five Cayman-based photographers – Lucy Best, Siobhan Timms, Tytia Habing, Justin Uzzell, and Aston Ebanks.
In some cases, the participating artists captured nature as an intangible force characterised by the constant wheels of change—such as the immediate effects of hurricane force winds on the landscape or the gradual wearing down of rock by running water—while others explored the intimacy of the instinctual bonds forged between mother and child. The resulting images investigated a variety of themes, ranging from Cayman’s relationship with its surrounding waters to mankind’s universal impulse to tame and control nature and the natural environment.
Forces of Nature was curated by Natalie Urquhart and was on view at Grand Old House, an off-site venue that hosted National Gallery exhibitions for several years, from 6 May – 24 August 2004.
