Fresh!

An exhibition of new international art

5 Feb – 26 Apr 2003

Exhibition

A colourful assemblage of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations from 16 local and regional artists – among them Luciana Abait, Yvonne Bobrowicz, Luis Gispert, and Federico Uribe – Fresh! presented an eclectic assortment of innovative works from established and emerging creative practitioners.

With artists drawn from Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, the United States, Barbados, and Cuba, the featured artworks were selected by exhibition curator and founding National Gallery Director, Leslie Bigelman— many of which she discovered over the course of several years of travel and professional research. Commenting on her selection criteria, she stated: “each of the participating artists uses their minds and tools to make bold statements, creating contemporary art that goes beyond the ‘normal’ display one expects to see in an art gallery.”

Seeking to explicitly challenge preconceived understandings of art and its ultimate meaning and purpose, the exhibition sought to provide a platform for discussion, debate, and development within the local Caymanian art scene. Fresh! was on view from 5 February – 26 April 2003 at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands’ former location in Harbour Place.
