Portrait of an Artist

Self-portraiture

5 Aug – 23 Sep 2004

Exhibition

Portrait of an Artist was a group exhibition dedicated to the art of self-portraiture as interpreted by 23 local artists, among them Wray Banker, Avril Ward, Charles Long, and Nasaria Suckoo Chollette. Historically, artists have long studied the roles and effects of the artist-subject-viewer relationship in order to grapple with themes of identity, social status, individuality, and mortality. With media ranging from traditional oil on canvas to screen prints and video installations, the participating artists sought to engage with portraiture as a genre that has long transcended its original documentary purposes, highlighting instead its capacity to serve as a site of introspection, while simultaneously conveying both personal and universal messages.

Portrait of an Artist was curated by Natalie Urquhart and was on view at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands from 05 August – 23 September 2004.
