Exhibition
As part of the National Gallery’s mission to promote and encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts, Rousings sought to celebrate and educate the local community, as well as the wider region, on the creative contributions of contemporary Jamaican artists. The exhibition featured the work of 18 multimedia practitioners – among them David Boxer, Albert Chong, and Laura Facey – who were contributing to a progressive Jamaican art scene through their innovative means of production.
Commenting on the importance of the exhibition debuting in Cayman, Co-Curator Nancy Barnard noted that “the exhibitions and related events that the Gallery oversees are instrumental in the education and development of our own Caymanian artists”. Rousings highlighted the participating artists’ experimental engagement with a wide range of media and techniques, including three-dimensional sculptures and video installations, as well as collage and mixed media works on canvas, paper, and panel.
Rousings was on view at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands from 10 January – 20 March 2004. It was curated by former National Gallery Director, Nancy Barnard, in collaboration with Dr. David Boxer of the Jamaica National Gallery and Hope Brooks of the Edna Manley School of Art.
