Exhibition
Stories We Tell was an interdisciplinary exhibition project that included the work of over 70 local amateur and professional writers and photographers. For this exhibition, each photographer was commissioned to produce a series of five images that were subsequently placed in unmarked envelopes and chosen at random by the participating writers. Encouraged to craft their own creative interpretations of these visual documents, the resulting exhibition was a stylistic and thematically diverse assortment of stories—ranging from surreal tales to autobiographical recollections of daily life. Through its unconventional format, the exhibition project sought to bring participants together by combining the inter-related disciplines of photography and the written word—creating a unique brand of collaborative storytelling that honoured Cayman’s long traditions of oral history and artistic expression.
Stories We Tell was on view from 2 July – 5 September 2003 at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands’ former location in Harbour Place.
