The Persistence of Memory

A group exhibition on how memory shapes our character

19 May – 19 Aug 2011

Exhibition

The Persistence of Memory was a group exhibition that investigated the role memory plays in shaping our personal and collective sense of identity. Each of the invited artists were asked to consider how their own memories, good and bad, have shaped their personalities and animated their current actions and experiences. The exhibition pursued these themes by asking participating artists to experiment with archival materials, multi-media and installation – from a variety of social and cultural perspectives – to help us better understand ourselves. “For each of us as individuals, our memories establish where we’ve been, who we are. They are the threads that connect our childhood selves with the adults we have become,” said NGCI Director and the exhibition’s curator, Natalie Urquhart. Featured artists included Davin Ebanks, Manuela Dack, Rita Powell, Wray Banker, Anne Goulden, Aston Ebanks, David Bridgeman, Kaitlyn Elphinstone and Greg Lipton. The Persistence of Memory was on display at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands from May 19th-August 19th 2011.
