Time People Forgot

A photographic survey of Cayman and its people by Patrick Broderick

4 Jan – 31 Jan 2003

Exhibition

Time People Forgot was a photographic exhibition dedicated to documenting and celebrating local customs, historic buildings, and natural landscapes, in addition to those individuals that have played an important part in the development of our Islands. Spanning the decades between the 1970s-1990s, this photographic survey was captured by professional photographer Patrick Broderick, introducing audiences to the sights and faces that defined the Caymanian experience in years past.

Having experimented throughout his career with various types of film and photographic techniques, Broderick showcased a series of black and white photographs that revealed Cayman’s evolving culture and landscapes as a source of sustained inspiration for his practice. Visitors were treated to pictures of historic sites, as well as renowned figures such as Gladwyn K. “Miss Lassie” Bush, in 1993; Albert “Mr. Radley” Gourzong, in 1999; and Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to our Islands in 1983. Responding to the emotional resonance of these images for many members of the community, he stated, “Even though you may have mixed emotions about the obvious absence of some of these places today, we must appreciate that we cannot continue to live in the past but should move forward cautiously with the knowledge that the future will soon become the past”.

Equally integral to the exhibition was the educational programming that surrounded it, which encompassed classroom activities and associated materials that were distributed across the three Islands. Following the conclusion of the exhibition, a selection of the featured images was transformed into a multimedia presentation that served as an educational resource for many local schools.
